Verruca Treatment
At The Beute Clinic, we offer a range of effective treatments to help you manage and remove verrucas (plantar warts). Verrucas are caused by a viral infection and can be painful or unsightly, especially when located on the feet. Our range of treatments includes both traditional and advanced options to suit your needs. Below are the available treatment options:
Option 1: Do Nothing
In some cases, verrucas may disappear on their own, especially if they are new, recurrent, or not causing any symptoms. Your immune system can fight off the virus over time. This is a good option if the verruca is not causing discomfort, and we can simply monitor its progress over time.
When to Consider:
- If the verruca is not painful or growing.
- If it is a recent verruca.
- If you prefer a “watch and wait” approach.
Option 2: Freeze and Acid Treatment
This method involves cryotherapy, which freezes the verruca using liquid nitrogen, causing the water in the viral cells to expand and break the infected tissue. Freezing creates an ice burn that results in a blister, and over time, the verruca will shed.
We often combine this with salicylic acid, which speeds up skin cell turnover and helps shed the viral tissue. The combined approach tends to offer better results, but they can also be used separately.
- Cryotherapy can cause some discomfort, but the pain typically lasts only as long as the application.
- Salicylic Acid encourages the shedding of infected tissue and is a more gradual process.
Post-Treatment Care:
- Keep the dressing clean and dry for 3 days.
- Over-the-counter verruca treatments can be applied as part of your care routine.
Option 3: Verrutop (Nitric Acid)
Verrutop is a painless and non-invasive treatment that uses nitric acid to remove verrucas. This method involves applying nitric acid to the verruca once a week over a course of four treatments.
The nitric acid causes a chemical debridement, which encourages the infected skin to peel away naturally. The skin may turn yellow as it heals. Some cases may require a second course of treatment to fully eliminate the verruca.
Key Benefits:
- Painless and non-invasive.
- Suitable for those who prefer a less aggressive approach.
- No downtime required.
Option 4: Beetle Juice (Cantharone Treatment)
Beetle juice, or Cantharone, is a unique treatment that forms a blister under the verruca within 24 hours of application. The blister cuts off the blood supply to the wart, effectively killing it.
The blister may be uncomfortable, inflamed, and itchy, but this reaction is a normal part of the process. You may notice blood in the blister fluid, which is not a cause for concern. The blister dries out and crusts over in 4-7 days, eventually leaving healthy skin underneath.
What to Expect:
- Blistering within 24 hours.
- The wart usually falls off with the blister.
- Complete healing takes about 7 days, with mild redness or inflammation after.
Post-Treatment Care:
- Your wart will be covered with tape, which should stay on for at least 4 hours.
- Once removed, wash with mild soap and protect the area with a loose plaster.
- Daily soaks in cool water may be recommended for relief.
Option 5: K-Laser Treatment
Our most advanced option is K-Laser therapy, which uses a 445nm blue wavelength laser to evaporate moisture within the viral cells, effectively killing the verruca virus. The laser treatment is precise and targets only the infected tissue, minimising the risk of bleeding and infection.
This method also uses 660nm and 970nm wavelengths for superficial and deep tissue healing, helping to speed up recovery time without the need for post-treatment care.
Key Benefits:
- Quick, painless, and effective.
- No need for post-treatment dressings or care.
- Minimises the risk of infection.
- Stimulates natural tissue healing for faster recovery.
General Information about Verrucas
Verrucas are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can appear anywhere on the body, although they are most common on the feet. While generally harmless, they can spread through direct or indirect contact, such as in public showers or swimming pools. Verrucas can become painful or bleed, particularly when on pressure points like the soles of the feet.
