Supporting All Feet: Social Stories and Luca the Verruca
At our clinic, we believe that everyone deserves access to foot care that feels safe, welcoming, and inclusive. That’s why we’re proud to share our specially created social stories and introduce Luca the Verruca, our friendly video guide who helps explain what a verruca is in a way that’s fun, clear, and easy to understand for kids.
Whether it’s nail surgery, a general podiatry visit, or verruca treatment, we understand that medical environments can feel overwhelming—especially for children or neurodiverse individuals. Our resources are designed with this in mind. Please check them out below.
Incorporating PECS for Accessible Communication
Our social stories are created using visual formats inspired by PECS, the Picture Exchange Communication System, which is often used in SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) environments. PECS is a communication system that uses pictures or symbols to help children communicate their wants and needs when spoken language may be difficult.
The main goal of PECS is to teach functional communication, and research has shown it can also support the development of spoken language. By using familiar, clear visuals and step-by-step guidance, we aim to reduce anxiety and support understanding in a calm, predictable way.
Our social stories include:
- What to expect during a visit to the podiatrist or foot health practitioner
- A step-by-step guide to nail surgery, including needle-free options
- Friendly visuals that reduce fear and uncertainty
- Reassurance and flexibility for different communication and sensory needs

Our explainer video helps younger patients understand what a verruca is, using simple language and bright visuals to make learning about foot care more engaging.
